Superfood #5 – Grass-fed Beef/Meat


Following closely behind butter from grass-fed cows is the GRASS-FED meat itself…

They are also called ‘pasture-raised’.   Yes, cows that are (were ;p) free to roam in lush green pastures and fed on grass, naturally grown with no sprayed pesticides.  As oppose to ‘grain-fed’ or ‘corn-fed’, i.e.. cows eating artificial foods that they are not supposed to be eating in the first place…

Many people think that red meat is unhealthy and because they do not understand how the health of the animal affects how healthy the meat is for consumption.  I want to share this important fact with you that “an unhealthy animal provides unhealthy meat, but a healthy animal provides healthy meat”.

Admittedly, most meat that we see at the butcher in the market or grocery store are from cows raised on grains, mainly corn (and some, soybeans).  Soy and corn are NOT the natural diet of cow, and therefore changes the chemical balance of fats and other nutrients in their meat.

Grain-fed meat is typically very high in inflammatory omega-6 fats and very low in healthy omega-3 fats.   Sadly, too, the practice of feeding cows corn and soy as the main portion of their diet upsets their digestive system (meant to digest grass & other forage only) and makes them sick, thus increases the amount of dangerous e-coli in the meat.

This is not the case with grass-fed meat.

Grass-fed meat from cows that were raised on the type of natural foods that they were meant to eat in nature (grass & other forage), have much higher levels of healthy omega-3 fats and lower levels of inflammatory omega-6 fats compared to grain-fed beef.

Grass fed meat also typically contain up to 3 times the Vitamin E than in grain-fed meats.

Best part is, such meats  contain a special healthy fat called conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in MUCH higher levels than grain-fed meat.  CLA has been proven in scientific studies in recent years to help in burning fat and building lean muscle (which can help you lose weight!!).   And not to mention that grass-fed meats are some of the highest quality proteins that you can possibly eat……to burn fat and build lean muscle !!!

So the next time you feel like tucking into a juicy steak or that meaty bolognaise sauce, look for grass-fed meats to cook them with!   They are a little harder to find and also pricier, but just ask your butcher or find a specialty meat store where they usually have cuts available.   It is well worth the extra $$ because to top this off,  the fats of the grass-fed meats when eaten (not cut away & discarded due to the fear of fats?!!) can actually accelerate the break down of your body fats and convert them into energy to be expended off….. So! you can burn fats while chomping on the juicy fats and savouring every bite of your steak🙂
